"I Remember"
STATION SIX
Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

Mixed media oilgraph on canvas with blood
36"x36"

In this Station we see Veronica putting herself in danger to give Jesus a moment of comfort. It is believed that Veronica was the woman Jesus healed of bleeding. Here I wanted to show a moment of remembering, even at great risk. The soldier's sword hovers above her. For me this was also the moment I wished to show Simon beginning to see who he was carrying the cross for.

We are asked to contemplate "How much would you risk to comfort Jesus?"

This is a Station for which there is not a scriptural reference. The story comes from tradition and is often referred to as "Veronica's Veil" where the face of Jesus was left upon the cloth. The veil was supposedly destroyed by a fire in the 1200's and we are left with no evidence for such a relic existing. I wanted to emphases the emotional aspect which I believe is very honest.

"memories of blood
the years have not wiped away

sanguine dream of myself spilling out
rivers of shame

then you...
your robe...
the robe I just had to...

your friends tried to stop me
who was I to approach you?

then your face
that face...

your eyes healed me there
and I swear not a day has passed
or a sun drunk into the sea
that I don't remember you

and though other hands try to stop me now
allow me this...
my Lord
my one last rememberance

your robe
the blood
and the never setting sun
of your face"
