"Mothers
were not made to outlive their children
The mothers of war
The mothers of hunger
Their hearts like falling trees
(Murderers...)
Who of any would not give the last bread?
The last breath?
(Stay back...)
The child taken
takes them
(We were to grow old)...
But there
is a word in the wind
that will grow into a chorus no ear of man
can ignore
but what does that matter now?
Galilean boy with golden eyes
(I tried
my
son
my Lord
my baby...)"

Jesus is Taken Down From the Cross

Pieta
has only one definition: Mary with the crucified body of Jesus. "Pieta"
comes from the Latin word for piety. Though I do not doubt this was
a moment that spoke to that state, I believe that there was nothing
contemplative or distantly forlorn about this moment as we have seen
in countless depictions. Mary...was a mother whose son was brutally
murdered. I chose the word "Furia," the Latin word for "Rage."
Her wrist runs with her own blood as she unconsciously holds the thorns.
His blood runs over her hand almost as if He still lived. To her left,
the soldier with the piercing spear backs away. Behind her, almost unseen,
is the presence of a woman holding a stalk of wheat, speaking to the
time when Jesus was chastised by the Pharisees for picking wheat on
the Sabbath.
We are asked to contemplate "Now that it is accomplished...what
have we learned? What will you do now?"
