Altars by Night (Gideon Destroys his Father's Altar to Baal)
Oilgraph on wooden panel with brass powder// 36” x 24”
"Now it came to pass the same night that the Lord said to him, “Take your father’s young bull, the second bull of seven years old, and tear down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the wooden image[d] that is beside it; and build an altar to the Lord your God on top of this rock in the proper arrangement, and take the second bull and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the image which you shall cut down.” So Gideon took ten men from among his servants and did as the Lord had said to him. But because he feared his father’s household and the men of the city too much to do it by day, he did it by night."
-Judges 6:25-27

It was the third scene we shot on the first of the two days of shooting. Hackett had just wrapped his show for the Discovery Science channel ("Stuck With Hackett") and we met at Big Art Labs in downtown Los Angeles. Naturally when we planned this, I didn't have a broken altar to Ba'al handy, but as Providence would have it, we had just smashed out these concrete pads left over in the parking lot from when the compound was a paint factory.
I took the slabs, along with cloth, a bowl, dead flowers and such and arranged the scene. I made the hammer out of a dowel rod, foam and rope. Though we shot way back in June 2011, the piece was created live January 13th, 2012 at Tribe of Los Angeles. The performance creation of the work was 10 minutes.
