Gideon had just defeated the Midianites upon the plains in an act so bold and ingenious that not a single weapon was raised. Against the thousands he stood with just three hundred. So having routed their army, he went in pursuit of their commanders.

Coming to Sukkoth, his men exhausted and hungry, he asked for bread to feed them. Despite this victory protecting Sukkoth as well, they dismissed him. Gideon vowed revenge upon his return and kept his promise.
