It is the moment just before. In a second the first nail will be driven in. It is in this moment that Jesus speaks His profound words, "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

“Who is this?
What is that you raise in your hand?
Are you a father?

You are I see

I have a father too

Your child...
tell him...
Tell him to remember this day

No don't hesitate
If it were not you

it would be someone else

But it is you

So do your job
Do it quickly

and remember...”

This was the first Station photographed before we could rig the pulley system to the ceiling. Though I had photographed the moment the first nail was driven in, it seemed too much and actually took us out of the moment. What seemed was a wiser choice was to capture the moment just prior which placed the audience in the role of the soldier with Jesus looking directly at us.

At the top right are three splinters of wood from the cross itself.
